What is a Ketogenic Diet?

What is a Ketogenic Diet?

One of the most popular diets to hit the market in the past couple of years is the ketogenic or keto diet.  It is a lot different from traditional diets where you cut back on calories and you get to indulge in a lot of foods that wouldn’t be allowed on most other diet regimens.  Let’s have a look at what is a ketogenic diet and whether it can work for you.

What is a ketogenic diet?

On a keto diet you consume very few carbs and it is very high in fat.  You can start your day off with a breakfast full of bacon and eggs fried in butter and still lose weight.  Yes, you can eat chicken wing, steak and bacon and you don’t really have to count calories however it’s not all sunshine and roses there are some things you are going to have to give up.  While keto does allow you to eat fatty foods there are rules you are going to have to stick to.  If you have a sweet tooth you may find a keto diet a struggle.

A State of Ketosis

Eating very few net carbs puts your body into a state of ketosis.  When you are in ketosis you start burning your fat stores for energy, that is how you lose weight so quickly with a ketogenic diet.  But what is the threshold that puts you into ketosis?  It can vary from person to person but ideally you want to stay under 25 net carbs.  There are several experts who advise you that in order to even get into ketosis you should initially keep your net carbs under 10.  What exactly is a net carb?  Net carbs are the amount of carbs you consume minus the fiber that is included in them.

A keto diet has a fair amount of mixed reviews, some swear by it saying that it helped them to lose weight quickly and with little or no discomfort that comes with being on a diet.  Many advocates of keto swear that not only did the weight come off but they feel better than ever and their mental clarity and energy levels have improved drastically.  The critics of the keto diet claim that it is too restrictive for long term success, and of course the amount of fat is a problem for long term health.
